Part A

Scenario: Struggling to See a Client’s Strengths Due to Differing Beliefs

In a hypothetical situation, If I was working with a client who has recently made the decision to undergo an abortion. This decision conflicts with my personal beliefs about the sanctity of life.

Initially, I would feel a sense of discomfort or even disapproval. I may have struggled to reconcile my professional role with my personal values. The client's choice could have triggered internal conflicts and made it difficult to see their strengths and resilience. I would probably question whether I could support them effectively given your differing perspectives.

During the interaction, I would notice that my own judgment was clouding my ability to empathize fully with the client. I would feel frustrated or anxious about how to approach the situation without letting my personal beliefs interfere with my professional responsibilities.

At the moment, it’s crucial to recognize these feelings and actively work to separate them from my professional role. After the interaction, reflecting on these emotions can help me gain insight into how personal beliefs might affect my practice. This reflection should also involve examining the client's situation with a strengths-based perspective.

Over time, I might come to understand that the client’s decision was made within their own context of resilience and strength. Despite differing beliefs, I can acknowledge that the client demonstrated significant courage and autonomy in making a decision that they felt was right for them.

To address such challenges in the future, it’s essential to practice self-awareness and maintain a commitment to cultural competence. This involves:

  1. Recognizing Personal Biases: Acknowledge and reflect on my own beliefs and how they might impact my practice.
  2. Focusing on the Client’s Perspective: Shift the focus from my personal views to understanding the client’s needs, strengths, and experiences.
  3. Engaging in Supervision and Training: Seek supervision or additional training on managing personal biases and enhancing cultural competence.
  4. Applying a Strengths-Based Approach: Continuously remind myself to look for and build upon the client's strengths and resilience, regardless of personal disagreements.

By addressing these aspects, I can ensure that my practice remains client-centered, empowering, and respectful of diverse beliefs and values.

Part B

1. Competencies Developed This Week:

This week, I focused on developing cultural competence and self-awareness, particularly in recognizing and addressing personal biases and understanding clients’ perspectives. I worked to integrate a strengths-based approach into my practice and enhance my skills in empathetic engagement with clients from diverse backgrounds.

2. Case Review:

In a recent case, I worked with a client who had decided to undergo an abortion, a decision that conflicted with my personal beliefs. Initially, I struggled to see the client’s strengths and resilience due to my discomfort with their choice. This made it challenging to maintain an objective and supportive stance. I felt conflicted about how to balance my personal values with my professional responsibility to support the client.

3. Concerns/Struggles/Challenges/Dilemmas Experienced This Week:

I experienced difficulties in separating my personal values from my professional role. My initial reaction was one of discomfort and judgment, which affected my ability to fully empathize with and support the client. This struggle made it hard to focus on the client’s strengths and autonomy.

4. What Do You Specifically Need Help With in Relation to the Above Concern/Struggle/Challenge/Dilemma?

I need guidance on managing personal biases and ensuring they do not interfere with my professional practice. I also seek advice on maintaining a strengths-based approach while addressing clients' needs and decisions that may conflict with my personal beliefs.

5. What Ethical Standards from the NASW Code of Ethics Did You (Would You/Can You) Deploy to Navigate the Concern/Struggle/Challenge/Dilemma?

Cultural Competence and Social Diversity (Standard 1.05): I need to ensure that my personal values do not affect my professional responsibility to respect and support the client’s choices and cultural context.

Integrity (Standard 1.06): Upholding honesty and transparency in my practice requires me to confront and manage my biases effectively.

Respect for Clients (Standard 1.01): I must respect the client’s autonomy and decisions, focusing on their strengths and resilience regardless of my personal opinions.

6. Supervisor’s Response:

A supervisor might suggest exploring personal biases further through self-reflection and supervision. They might recommend engaging in additional training on cultural competence and biases. They could also emphasize the importance of maintaining a client-centered approach and using supervision as a space to process and navigate complex feelings.

7. Resources You Can Access to Continue Developing Your Competence in This Area:

Workshops and online courses on cultural competence and managing personal biases.

Regular supervision sessions and peer discussions to process difficult cases and gain different perspectives.

Review of NASW Code of Ethics and additional readings on strengths-based practice and cultural competence.

8. 3 Action Steps That You Will Take to Change Your Ways of Thinking to Best Approach Clients from Cultural Backgrounds That May Be Unfamiliar to You:

1. I will regularly reflect on my own values and biases and how they impact my practice. This includes keeping a reflective journal to document and address any personal judgments that arise during client interactions.

2. I will enroll in workshops and training programs focused on cultural competence and working with diverse populations to enhance my understanding and ability to work effectively with clients from unfamiliar backgrounds.

3. I will actively apply a strengths-based perspective in all client interactions, focusing on clients’ resilience and capabilities rather than allowing personal beliefs or judgments to influence my practice.

Plan for Next Week:

Evaluate how well I have managed my biases and integrated the strengths-based approach in recent cases.

Identify and schedule upcoming cultural competence training sessions.

Prepare specific cases and experiences to discuss with my supervisor, focusing on any remaining challenges and how to address them moving forward.
