Multiple Submissions - Similarities and Settings
Hi Turn It In Team & Fellow Educators:
I have a couple of questions I would appreciate any advice and assistance on. These are in relation to the usage of Moodle-based assignments for a graduate statistics course. Appreciate your time and assistance!.
Cheers,
Dustin
Context: We have always used Turnitin, requiring students to submit a pdf similarity report with the word docs for their assignment, but have now started using the automated turnitin process integrated with our Moodle course page and want to improve our outcomes and ability to coach students and ID issues with the reporting feedback. We have a number of students who end up needing to resubmit assignments at least once, which increases similarity, so we are looking for best practices. Note, we have professors as well as PhD students serving as TAs both accessing the course as instructors, authorized by the professor.
Q1. Are there recommended methods to set up the turnitin supported assignment in Moodle to prevent increased similarity from a student's own work? For example, making 2 assignments for each one, so one does not need to be removed and replaced with a resubmission, or a single assignment with 2 parts/sections, one reserved only for those who need to resubmit, versus, specific parameters we need to use when building the assignment in moodle?
Q2. When similarities do increase, how can we differentiate a similarity report which is identifying similarity from the student's own work on their initial submission, versus another student at our school?
Q3. If we are not able to address these concerns via this forum, and need more specific guidance, what is the best way to request further assistance?

Hi Dustin, Thanks for writing in. When you create an assignment, please select "Institutional Paper Repository" in the "Submit Papers to" option. This will ensure that your students revised submissions (against the same assignment) will not be checked against their earlier submissions (for the same assignment). However, if all student papers are being added to the "Institutional Repository", then the similarity report will show any similarity with other student submissions. This should resolve both Q1 and Q2. Please let us know if you have any further queries on this.
