Navigating the AI writing puzzle
I think we would all agree that AI writing presents the education sector with a complex puzzle for ensuring the integrity of student work. Indeed, many aspects of academic integrity are complicated, often with variations from institution to institution, discipline to discipline and even class to class. Therefore it is maybe naive to think that, used in isolation, AI writing detection tools are a potential solution to AI writing misuse.
In the past year institutions have sought to update academic integrity policies and review assessment practices and outcomes. Alongside this many educators have initiated constructive and positive conversations with students to develop AI literacy skills to help navigate the world of AI writing. None of these have been explored in isolation, but rather with a need to approach this puzzle as a process, working with our students.
Another thing that is clear is that as the landscape of AI writing is ever-evolving, and that more and more initiatives and approaches will need to be considered as part of this puzzle.
With these complexities in mind Turnitin has developed the AI Puzzle to help institutions and educators to visualise the complex network of factors around using AI writing tools and to begin to plot a course forward step by step.
