An “I love presentations, but I hate grading them” solution

As a ELA & Speech teacher, I loved watching my students use real life skills in my class like giving live or virtual presentations. But, I often found watching the presentations, grading on a rubric, AND giving specific feedback WHILE watching them, a difficult 'multi-task' to accomplish. To be honest, it usually ended with me having to go back and decipher my shorthand and rewrite comments, taking extra hours that I didn’t not have to give.

 

Using a Grading Template in Feedback Studio solves this problem. I’m able to create or use an existing rubric AND add QuickMarks, AND add a voice comment, AND any overall comments I want to make while my students are presenting all without my students having to submit anything to Turnitin.

 

What’s a Grading Template?

It’s essentially a blank piece of paper submitted for the student. When you open this blank “submission,” you will be able to drag and drop QuickMark feedback and/or write inline text comments. This “submission” will also be immediately linked to and display the rubric you selected when you created your assignment, allowing you to select the indicators for each criterion and have the points automatically calculated for each student.

 

How to create a Grading Template: 

I create an assignment and add a rubric in the optional settings section, as I normally would. Then, I open the assignment. Beside each student’s name is a clickable gray pencil. I click on this pencil for each student, this pencil turns blue, and this creates a Grading Template for my students.

 

 

 

 

I then click on the [Granding Template] and a new window will appear with my regular Feedback Studio grading view and a blank submission onto which I can drag and drop QuickMarks.

 

This was much more efficient, organized, & manageable than anything I attempted to use in the past. The feedback I provided my students was effective, robust, & instantaneous: Students could read their feedback, my comments, and see their scores as soon as they were finished presenting.
