Practice, practice, practice - How to help students strengthen their feedback skills
Before I became an educator, I basically assumed that people could write well or not. I had no idea about the logistics, but I could fill out an outline post-essay because, well, I was told to!
I observed similar things in my own classroom and others as I worked to become a better teacher of writing. One thing that seemed key to success was creating a classroom culture that encouraged collaboration, especially as a way for students to review and provide feedback to their peers. I was taught writing in solitude, not community, so it did not come easily to me.
So I offer a two-fer today: A lesson presentation on how to help students create impactful Where to Next? feedback with an accompanying worksheet on how to practice strengthening your feedback by addressing the necessary elements of issue, action, and relevance so students know "where to (go) next" in their writing.
