Institutional Turnitin Default Configuration Settings for Assignments in Canvas

Problem: In Canvas, there is no way to configure Turnitin default settings for assignments on an institutional level.

Context: Our institution uses the Turnitin Originality service. We recently migrated to the Canvas LMS from the Sakai LMS. In Sakai, we had the ability to configure Turnitin default settings for instructors when they created new assignments -- one of the most important of which is the "Index all Submissions" setting. In Sakai, we configured this setting to disabled by default; this way, instructors could opt in to indexing submissions when needed, rather than needing to opt out for every single assignment.

This setup is particularly important given how instructors at our institution structure and manage student assignment submissions, i.e.:

  • When students need to submit larger papers in iterative phases (e.g., draft chapters), culminating in a final submission of the comprehensive paper near the end of the class.

  • When students need to resubmit a paper (e.g., after making requested changes, etc.).

  • When instructors feel that indexing papers isn't needed for short, 1-page assignment submissions.

  • When instructors need to strategize about how to utilize the Turnitin service in compliance with our institutional Turnitin policy.

Now that we're in Canvas, we're running into more and more situations where instructors are inadvertently indexing submissions. This creates more headache for us, since we have to gather the paper IDs and manually remove the submissions from our repository. We do our best to communicate best practices, but not everyone reads emails, attends workshops, or reviews documentation.

Please, please, please implement a way for individual institutions to set default Turnitin configuration settings for assignments in Canvas.
