Does turnitin distinguish between generative AI and assistive AI?

Does Turnitin distinguish between generative AI and assistive AI? Approximately 75% of my students' papers were identified as AI by Turnitin. When I questioned them, they stated that they only used Grammerly and ChapGPT.

My paper was identified as 65% AI-generated by AI Turnitin. However, I only used Grammarly for corrections. In my decade of writing, this is the first time AI Turnitin has flagged my work in this manner. With the increasing presence of AI, I feel that it has doubled the workload for writers, as even original content can be flagged as AI-generated. I agree with conducting similarity checks, but the process of identifying AI-generated content complicates our work as writers.

Be careful of Grammarly.  About 6-8 months ago, Grammarly changed their model.  They went from "assistive" to "generative."  I have run into the same issues.  Earlier this year, I asked a student whose essay was tagged AI to show me what he did.  When he opened Grammarly, it offered him options of "how he wanted to sound when he wrote."  He chose one of the 5 or 6 options.  Something like "college freshman," or "advertising executive."  I don't remember what the options were exactly.  When he his submit, Grammarly recomposed his essay.  Our district did some research, and ended up blocking Grammarly from student accounts because of this issue.  We have switched to Turnitin Draft Coach to help students with editing, citing sources, and formatting.

    Hope this helps!
