Should we ban AI writing tools in universities?
Those of you who attended the ICAI Annual Conference a few weekends ago I'm sure like my colleague, Verena Kunz-Gehrmann, writing here, would have heard many discussions about how universities and schools should address the use of AI writing tools by students (and staff).
Perhaps an outright ban on the use of such tools may be your institution's proposed method of addressing this challenge. However does this approach raise several logistical and pedagogical questions? For example, in practical terms how would such a ban be enforced? And what about issues of equity, since surely by banning such tools does this put students at a disadvantage in terms of their ability to develop key skills to enable them to use such tools ethically and responsibly?
