Turnitin Clarity’s Citation Assistant: What You Should Know

Turnitin Clarity gives instructors the option to enable an AI-powered citation assistant to help students become more confident and proficient writers.

Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Supported Citation Formats
    • Immediately supports APA and MLA citation formats.
    • Chicago and Harvard formats will be supported at a later date.
  2. How It Works
    • When enabled by their instructor, students can get citation feedback on their submission by clicking the “citation check” button.
  3. Feedback Provided On
    • Formatting to ensure that all citations/references match the specified style.
    • Mismatches between citations and references.
    • Missing citations.
  4. Where Feedback Appears
    • Citation feedback is delivered within the composition space, using the same pattern as grammar and spell check.
  5. AI Citation Assistant Prompts
    • “How do I cite this source?” (pasted or selected text)
    • “Do my citations in the text match my references?”
    • “Have I formatted my citations correctly?”

Note that instructors will be able to enable/disable citation help independently from Turnitin Clarity’s other AI assistant features, such as AI chat and grammar feedback. Additionally, all AI assistant features, including citation feedback, are only supported in English.
