Why educators should embrace LTI 1.3 for Turnitin Feedback Studio

In the ever-evolving world of edtech, one thing is clear: great teaching tools should work with you, not against you. That’s why we’re excited to share how upgrading your LMS integration to LTI 1.3 can help you get the most out of Turnitin Feedback Studio.

Whether you’re already using Turnitin Feedback Studio or exploring ways to improve your assessment workflows, here’s why the move to LTI 1.3 is worth exploring.

1. Built on modern industry standards

LTI stands for Learning Tools Interoperability. It’s a standard developed by 1EdTech, a member-led not-for-profit with the goal of developing an open, trusted, and innovative education technology ecosystem. The LTI standard helps edtech companies, like Turnitin, develop their products to integrate with others (think your LMS) easily.

LTI 1.3 is the latest standard, bringing about many improvements from previous versions. While we won’t go into the nitty-gritty and technical side, LTI 1.3 provides a smoother and more secure integration with your LMS.

2. Unlocks the new Similarity Report

LTI 1.3 gives you access to our new Similarity Report experience, which was designed from instructor feedback on our tools. The new experience provides clearer insights into the Similarity Reports by breaking similarity matches down into four categories:

  • Similarity matches where there are no citations or quotation marks around the matching text

  • Similarity matches with citations, but not quotation marks

  • Similarity matches with quotation marks, but no citations

  • Similarity matches with citations and quotation marks.

The new Similarity Report provides a more insightful integrity check, enabling educators to easily distinguish between intentional acts of misconduct and teachable moments, allowing them more time to offer valuable feedback tailored to individual student requirements.

The new Similarity Report is also a powerful tool for students. Giving them access allows them to engage more actively in the writing process, helping them to identify whether they need to paraphrase, add a citation, or make other revisions to strengthen their work.

The new Similarity Report also integrates the AI writing report, ending the need to open reports in a new tab.

3. Accesses the latest grading and feedback tools and assignment workflows

Alongside the new Similarity Report experience, our new grading and feedback tools have been rebuilt from the ground up to help educators deliver feedback and grade faster and more efficiently, with additional features and functionality, all while being fully accessible.

To name a few changes, we’ve moved comments into the document margin, reducing clutter on student work, while introducing the ability to pin specific comments to students in the feedback summary. The rubric experience has been completely redesigned, introducing functionality like ranged rubrics and decimal grading, providing educators more flexibility in the way they grade.

4. Support for innovative assessment types

Integrating Turnitin Feedback Studio via LTI 1.3 provides access to additional assignment types beyond the Standard Assignment, which you probably know us for and use every day.

Paper to Digital, our tool for grading paper-based assessments digitally, allows you to bulk scan student work for the assignment, and grade at scale by taking advantage of AI-assisted answer grouping.

Our newest product, Turnitin Clarity, includes a composition space for students to draft their writing assignments with transparency and, when permitted and prompted by the educator, receive AI-generated feedback on their writing to help them improve their work. This gives students the confidence to demonstrate that their submissions are original and representative of their learning. It's an all-in-one place to establish the acceptable use of AI by assignment and to help students use AI responsibly. With Turnitin Clarity, educators can view the student's writing activity and access insights to easily assess originality, levelling the field, and helping ensure fair, equitable grading

* Turnitin Clarity and Paper to Digital are paid add-ons available to your institution’s Turnitin Feedback Studio subscription.

5. A more consistent Turnitin experience

LTI 1.3 delivers a consistent experience across platforms and LMSs. Whether you’re switching between courses or campuses, or even institutions, Turnitin Feedback Studio via LTI 1.3 looks and behaves the same. That means less training, fewer support tickets, and more time for teaching.
