Spinbot.com

Good day, I have just discovered that Spinbot provides students with yet another opportunity for plagiarism. I created a file from Spinbot and submitted it to Turnitin. Turnitin does not pick up plagiarized content from Spinbot. Has anyone encountered this? Do you know how I could contact Turnitin to make them aware of this? Thank you!

    Hi  Debbora Nightingale !

    Thank you for reaching out!

Websites like Spindot are considered a sort of paraphrasing "translation service" site, which means that they have a live writing space. The site immediately responds to what is put in the text box, which is not crawlable by our technology, since it is not a stagnant piece of text. I've surfaced this with our product team and they are aware of paraphrasing sites like this one.

Spinbot papers do still tend to show up red, just in lesser degrees, broken up like in the #3 example here: https://www.turnitin.com/static/plagiarism-spectrum/?_ga=2.12246068.169337023.1539016358-1138326076.1523378311

We suggest that educators look at the way they've selected the Originality Report options and make sure that small matches are included. Additionally, the papers being run through programs like Spinbot are often fairly obvious to spot: the synonyms they switch in usually come across as very unnatural.

For this and any other ideas that might support efficiency, feel free to reach out to the product team directly (pmg-feature-request@turnitin.com ) and/or our support team with specific questions about our software at tiisupport@turnitin.com or here on our support page.

    I hope this helps!

    Best

    Audrey
