Time Zone Management, Part 2

Hi,

I previously submitted a feature request related to this, but I realized that I misunderstood how Turnitin was managing time zones. I'm submitting another request now because my request is slightly different.

The school I work for is in the Eastern Time (ET) zone, but I work remotely in the Central Time zone (CT), which is one hour earlier than ET. The Canvas course for the school are all set to ET.

If my Canvas account time zone is set to CT, when I create a normal Canvas assignment in one of my school courses, Canvas will display the due date/availability dates in both local time (my Canvas account time zone) and course time (the course time zone which is the school's time zone). Please see the screenshot for an example.

If I choose to manually set my Canvas account time zone to ET (which I do), then the due date/availability dates just display one time since my account time zone matches the course time zone. In both of these cases, Canvas operates based off of the course time zone and my account time zone, not my computer time zone.

If I create an LTI 1.3 New Standard Turnitin assignment on Canvas, it uses the time zone of my browser/computer. So, when I create this Turnitin assignment, the dates/times will be in CT since that's my computer's time zone. That means that I have to calculate in my head what the proper due date is. So, if I want the assignment due at 11:59 pm ET, I have to set the Turnitin assignment to 10:59 pm.

This makes it easy for there to be user error. If Turnitin, when it realizes there's a difference between the computer time zone and the Canvas course time zone, would display both the course time and the computer time (like in the screenshot), this would be so, so helpful.

Also for Canvas, if the account time zone is different from the course time zone, when you are in an assignment and hover your cursor over a date, it shows both the local time and the course time (see other screenshot). It would also be great if Turnitin could add this feature.

An additional feature would be for Turnitin to provide a little dropdown menu where you could choose the exact time zone that you want the assignment dates/times to be in.

Finally, it would be great if Turnitin, at least for the Canvas integration, used the Canvas account time zone for the dates/times rather than the browser/computer time zone. This avoids situations where the Turnitin assignment settings display one time and Canvas assignment settings display another time. For example, I set my Canvas account time zone to ET even though I live in CT, because this makes all the Canvas dates display in my school time zone (ET). However, since Turnitin uses the computer/browser time zone rather than the Canvas account time zone, this can easily lead to the Turnitin assignment settings displaying a different time than the Canvas assignment settings. This quickly gets confusing.

Thank you for bearing with my long feature request and for your consideration. I wasn't sure how to explain it in a briefer format.

Kindly,

Tim Baggenstos
