When the final product doesn't tell the whole story, what do you want to know? #AskTurnitin

A polished final paper can tell us a lot about what a student produced. But in the age of AI, it may tell us less about how the learning happened.

Did the student's thinking evolve? Where did they revise? How did they use AI? What decisions did they make along the way?

If you could better understand one part of your students' writing or learning process, what would you want to see—and why?

For educators already using Turnitin Clarity: Which process insights have actually been useful to you? What do you look for when reviewing student work?

I want the option to see the writing in progress. I don't have to check it every day, but both setting check in dates for a grade and being able to answer questions while they write is invaluable. If Clarity allowed me to see and comment while they were writing, it would be much more useful to me.

Great suggestions! Our product team is exploring these features. In the meantime, there are a few things that could help achieve the iterative check-in you're seeking. Clarity assignments can be chained together to provide natural check points. For example, if you wanted to have an assignment chunked out for periodic feedback windows, you could split the assignment across multiple assignment parts. Students would be able to see the feedback you applied, and continue writing their draft from part to part.  Additionally, each Clarity assignment has the ability to see timestamps and versions so you can see how the writing has progressed within each assignment part.  Let me know how that works, and if it is helping you achieve your goal!

Thank you for the suggestion, but it's not workable. It's not really in progress feedback as much as it is feedback on smaller portions of the assignment. Yes, I can split a research paper up into Annotated Bibliography, Research, Prewriting, Rough Draft, Final Draft with Clarity right now. But, I not only do that already, I offer feedback within those assignments while they are in progress. So, I can make suggestions and ask questions on a sentence by sentence basis in the rough draft, for example. That is at least as valuable to students as the feedback after the assignment is finished, if not more.

When I was teaching, I valued seeing the writing process—not just the final product. But doing that at scale can be overwhelming. When you’re supporting dozens (or hundreds!) of students, the sheer volume can make focusing on the final product feel like the only practical option, and I heard this from countless dedicated, veteran educators in my years of leadership and teacher preparation classes at the university.

If you could get a clearer view into a student’s writing process without adding more work, what would actually help you understand their learning? What would just be noise?

For those already using Clarity: What's changed since you started? Is there an insight you thought you'd rely on but barely look at? Or something unexpected that's now part of your routine? Your answers will help educators who are just starting out know where to look first.
