Hi team! When trying to migrate from LTI 1.1 to 1.3 on our Canvas test environment, I encountered an error when trying to load the dummy assignment after creating it. Would just like to share this as shared knowledge as we are aware that the engineers from Turnitin are currently working with Canvas to fix this issue, and we are not the only institution who are experiencing this issue when trying to configure LTI 1.3 on the Canvas test environment. Thanks!

mary. speight To clarify, you installed LTI 1.3 in your production Canvas environment using the inherited key directions?  If so, please submit a ticket to Turnitin Support that details the steps you took, your account information (including the account number you tried to configure to), and where in the process this error occurred.  Be sure to copy your Account rep on the email.  That way we can do a deeper dive into your account.

Good Morning!  I wanted to put this here just in case there is anyone that is interested, but may not have gotten the email.  We are hosting a webinar on June 13 at 11est for Canvas admins focusing specifically on Migration Support.  To register for this event, please click here.  Hope to see you there!

I'm looking for any documentation for teachers on using 1.3 to create assignments. Have those docs or videos been created and if so, how do we access? Thank you.

Annie Wojcik Good Morning!  We are putting together a public facing roadmap of upcoming features now.  When it is ready, I can always post it here as well.

Hi, I have reached out to both my sales rep and Turnitin Product Support and neither will tell me if I need to take any action regarding my configuration.  How can I get someone to help me?  This is really frustrating.

Rebecca Penina Simon Good Morning! I am sorry for the delay as I have been out of the office. I would recommend reaching out to your account manager for assistance. Can you tell me what institution you are from so I can assist with that? When you move to LTI 1.3 from LTI 1.1 is entirely up to your institution. In addition, this migration affects only the LTI 1.1 integration, not the plagiarism framework integration. This FAQ guide might help you with your questions though - https://help.turnitin.com/feedback-studio/canvas/lti13/administrator/administrator-migration-faq.htm

The documentation says it's not currently recommended for Blueprint courses. What is the issue that the blueprint is causing? Do the assignments just not work at all, or are there settings that don't transfer over?

mary. speight Settings do not transfer over so LTI 1.3 is not currently recommended with Blueprint courses.  Was this what you were testing the integration on?  Have you tried to create a brand new assignment?

Stephanie Stocks No, this is not what I was testing. This was just a general question so we can answer our faculty members' questions about blueprints.

My teachers really like to use Speedgrader so that parents are able to see feedback in Canvas. This means we are using the plagiarism checker option with Turnitin 1.3. We do not see a way to preload a document so that it will not be part of the similarity check. Also, we don't see where to turn on AI detection with this route. I see that Canvas is certified with 1.3, so we thought all these options would work with 1.3. Am I not seeing all the options or are we doing something incorrectly? Thank you!!

      Kimberly Thompson

      Kimberly,

Good Afternoon!  If you prefer to use the speedgrader workflow for visibility to parents and to provide feedback to students, we recommend using the Plagiarism Framework integration workflow instead of the LTI 1.3 integration workflow.  While the plagiarism framework integration does not have a template exclusion option, it does allow for AI detection which can be accessed when you open the report from speedgrader.  It may be easier to compare the integrations and their functions using this chart.  If your school does not already have Plagiarism Framework integration installed, you might want to reach out to your Canvas admin to ask about it.  In addition, here are the instructor guides for quick reference.  Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Stephanie Stocks Thank you for this information.  We already have the plagiarism framework set up. If I can vote for the template exclusion to become available along with the plagiarism framework, please let me know where. I will take a look at the guides to see how to use the AI detection. I appreciate it!

Kimberly Thompson We are in the same situation in my school. Turnitin made a significant strategic error in how they developed the LTI 1.3 tool, in my opinion.

I copied my Canvas course from last semester, including 58 Turnitin assignments. I previously used Feedback Studio, not Speedgrader, to do all my grading and give feedback, so I was told basically nothing would change. However, after 2.5 weeks of escalating problems, the only "solution" IT has offered is for me to re-create all 58 assignments (and fix about 125 links to those assignments in my Canvas courses).

However, the class has already started, and students have already submitted a draft to a PeerMark assignment. Since they are unable to see my Turnitin feedback on a previous assignment -- they don't get the embedded Turnitin window in the Canvas assignment (see attachment) -- I'm anticipating they won't be able to access the PeerMark assignment, either. Here's my question: Can I give them the class ID and enrollment key and have them complete the PeerMark assignment via Turnitin.com? My worry is that they are already enrolled in the course via Canvas, so I don't want them to create NEW accounts as they won't be able to access their Canvas submission. Do I tell them to use their college email and do a "forgot password" change on Turnitin.com? Will that change their ability to access via Canvas later or mess up their NetID (college login and password for Canvas, Outlook, etc.)? Please help!

Jana Bielecki Good Morning!  In your screenshot, it does not look like a Turnitin LTI 1.3 assignment (I can see no LTI inbox).  It looks like a plagiarism framework enabled assignment.  I will message the account manager and Implementation Consultant for the school.  They will reach out to you for troubleshooting assistance.

Stephanie Stocks Thanks for the reply, but I already submitted a ticket, and Turnitin and my college's Turnitin person have been working on the problem for nearly three weeks.

It was a Turnitin assignment in a previous course. I copied the course in Canvas, and all the assignments were supposed to operate as usual because I always used Turnitin, not Speedgrader, for grading. The students were able to submit their assignments through the embedded Turnitin LTI window in the Canvas assignment as usual, and I graded them in Turnitin as usual. The problem is that the graded assignment does not connect back to Canvas correctly. It shows up as a new submission (making it late in Canvas), and students can no longer see the LTI inbox. I can, but they can't, so they can't access my feedback. I'm hoping that the ticket that's already being worked on will eventually resolve this problem.

In the meantime, I have a related question about passwords. One student who'd used Turnitin in a previous class asked if she could have the course ID and enrollment key to access her feedback via Turnitin.com since the LTI window isn't showing in Canvas. I gave them to her, and she tried to login but had to change her password. Before I suggest this "fix" to all my classes, I'm wondering if her changing the password will have any effect on her ability to access Turnitin assignments in Canvas since students use their NetID (single password to login to email, Canvas, library, etc.). Also, if students have never used Turnitin before, will they need to create a Turnitin account and add the course with the ID and enrollment key, or do they already have an account because they submitted the assignment via Canvas?
